Village Clinic Ride Day 23: Enjoying Every Second

Avenue of the Giants to Piercy, CA

The forecast showed an 80% chance of rain, but the weather in our little pocket of the world didn’t seem to care about the forecast. The morning sunshine was gorgeous in the Avenue of the Giants, and we picked up where we had left off before, riding through towering redwood forests and enjoying every second of it. We liked it so much that we took an extra five-mile detour just to get more exposure to the forest. We happened across a person’s wallet sitting in the middle of the road, so we took that to the local ranger station, and we were lucky enough to show up as the ranger was handling some awesome dinosaur fossils.

Reluctantly, we eventually pedaled out of Humboldt State Park and its old-growth redwood trees. We were still in a redwood forest and it was still beautiful, but it didn’t have the same “force” as the old-growth forest we had left behind. We did have to do about five miles on the freeway shoulder, as there was no other way through and the freeway signs clearly indicated it was the only bicycle route south. Traffic was light and polite, but still, it’s an unavoidable shock to be passed by trucks traveling 70 mph.

Soon enough, we got back onto some country side-roads and the weather finally made good on that 80% chance of rain. We were just starting to get wet when we rolled into Piercy. Though we were quite tired from the prior two days, we still managed to pedal 48 miles, and that was good enough for us. We’ve got a significant climb to Leggett tomorrow, and we need some rest.
