They were ready to take on anything the Iraqis could throw at us so we could get to Baghdad, get rid of Saddam Hussein, and then go home. I came to Charlie Company from a staff job with 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment. I was the S-3 air, coordinating tactical air movement in and out of the sectors in which we operated during exercises. The whole time I was on the battalion staff I was waiting for company commander’s job to open up. That is the dream and the purpose of every line captain in the Army.

Matt Larimer, a tall, quiet Pennsylvanian, was my driver. He was young but kept his head about him. And my loader was Spc. Paul Helgenberger, a native of Micronesia who had an older brother in the division’s 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment. Like every other crew, mine went through some early growing pains. But once we got in synch I only had to tell them something once and they did it and did it well. And when I was busy leading the company, which was often, they fought the tank on their own.

I was not prepared, however, for the numbers and types of Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) charges with which I initially had to deal. The first heady rush of command had not even worn off when I found myself swamped with paperwork dealing with issues of drug use in the company. We had six soldiers who had tested positive for drugs. That quickly grew to thirteen when I started running random urinalyses almost every other week. That was more than 15 percent of the company. The drugs used ran the gamut from marijuana to Ecstasy to cocaine.
