For it is a production, usually in response to a request, to come out or write in the name of an identity which, once produced, sometimes functions as a politically efficacious phantasm. 24 A politics of identity and whatever kind of politics ensues from that project— multiculturalism, feminism, and gay movements— is first of all a politics about identity.
